Stanley Cup Winning Season

This jersey was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche during one of their first jersey auctions at McNichols Arena in April 1996. Although none of the first-year jerseys had a set mark, this jersey is believed to be from the first regular season set. The defining feature of this jersey is the sleeve customization, in which the sleeves have not only been shortened, but also tailored for an exact fit over the elbow pads and forearms. As with other first-set Avalanche jerseys, the nameplate has an uneven shape, suggesting that the plate backing was hand cut. Also note the smaller crest, stylized letters, and blocked Starter logo on the first-year jerseys. The jersey shows very good game use, with numerous marks throughout, especially on the jersey's front. The upper chest displays a very nice black mark. The sleeves show excessive marks, as well as a number of team repairs on the left elbow. The fight strap shows moderate rubbing-type pilling up and down. Overall, a well-worn shirt. The jersey comes with the Avalanche notarized LOA that accompanied all of the auctioned jerseys.

Alexi Gusarov Colorado Avalanche

Since making his NHL debut in 1990-91, defenceman Alexei Gusarov has been a fine positional player with an ability to make useful passes on offense. A veteran of several years in the Soviet League, he adapted quickly to the rigours of the NHL season and accepted a variety of roles to keep himself in the line up.

Born in Leningrad, Gusarov played with the local SKA club before joining the powerful Central Red Army of Moscow. He was a top player on the club for seven years and helped the USSR win the gold medal at the Calgary Olympics in 1988. The talented blueliner was selected 213th overall by the Quebec Nordiques in 1988 and looked solid in 36 games as a rookie in 1990-91.

The steady rearguard provided stability on the Nords' blueline and was part of the club's resurgence from the league's doormat to a first place finish in the Lockout-shortened regular season in 1995. The next year Gusarov remained with the franchise when it relocated to Colorado. During the 1996 post-season he provided savvy and nine assists while helping the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup. He took a regular shift on the powerful club until the early stages of the 2000-01 season.

The veteran blueliner was traded to the New York Rangers in December 2000 but the team disappointed and was out of the playoff race by the March deadline. Gusarov was picked up by the St. Louis Blues as they prepared to make a statement in the Western Conference playoffs. He was a useful player in 13 games as a the Blues reached the semifinals before bowing out to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Avalanche.

Quebec's 11th choice, 213th overall, in the 1988 Entry Draft. Transferred to Colorado after Quebec franchise relocated, June 21, 1995. Missed majority of 1999-2000 season recovering from leg injury suffered in game vs. Dallas, February 27, 2000. Traded to NY Rangers by Colorado for NY Rangers' 5th round choice (Frantisek Skladany) in 2001 Entry Draft, December 28, 2000. Traded to St. Louis by NY Rangers for Peter Smrek, March 5, 2001.
