Matt Nieto

Matt Nieto was born on November 5, 1992 in Long Beach, California. The product of the Boston University Terriers of the NCAA would be drafted in the second round, 47th overall, by the San Jose Sharks in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

After three years playing for the Terriers, Nieto elected to forgo his senior year and join the San Jose Sharks organization where he would join the AHL’s Worcester Sharks to end the 2012-13 season. Nieto would then make the 2014-15 opening night roster where he would make his NHL debut on October 3, 2013 in a 4-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Nieto would spend parts of four seasons with San Jose, which included 10-goal campaigns in 2015 and 2015. He struggled to find a spot in the Sharks lineup during the 2016-17 season and he was waived by the club on January 4, 2017. He was subsequently picked up by the Colorado Avalanche with whom he would finish the season.

On the international stage, Nieto would represent the United States twice in two Gold Medal performances at the 2009 and 2010 IIHF World Under 18 Championships.
