Ryan O'Reilly was born February 7, 1991, in Clinton, Ontario. A product of the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League, O'Reilly was selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the second round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
Surprisingly to some, O'Reilly cracked the Avalanche's opening night lineup, making him the youngest player in history to ever suit up for the club, as he took over the role of third-line center.
O'Reilly finished his rookie campaign tied for twelfth among all first-year players, but it was his speed, tenacious forechecking, and defensive play that were most impressive. As a member of the Avalanche, O'Reilly's play would continue to progress. In 2011-12 he notched 18 goals and 37 assists for 55 points, and during the lockout-shortened season of 2012-13, he tallied 20 points in just 29 games.
In 2013-14 O'Reilly was awarded the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy as the NHL player who best combined sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct with a high standard of play. He was the overwhelming choice, receiving 110 of 137 first-place votes to dethrone three-time Lady Byng winner Martin St. Louis. O'Reilly recorded a career-high 64 points for the Avalanche and led the club with 28 goals while being assessed just a single minor penalty over the course of the season. He joined Butch Goring as the only players ever to incur two or fewer penalty minutes over 80 or more regular season games.
After failing to sign O'Reilly to a contract extension, he was traded, along with Jamie McGinn, to the Buffalo Sabres for Nikita Zadorov, Mikhail Grigorenko, J.T. Compher and a second round pick at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. After the trade, O'Reilly signed a seven year contract with the Sabres.
In his first year with the Sabres, O'Reilly would record 21 goals and 39 assists in 71 games. At seasons end he would represent his homeland at the World Championship, helping Canada to the gold medal.
O'Reilly appeared in 81 games for the Sabres in 2017-18, notching 24 goals and adding 37 assists. It would prove to be his final season in Buffalo however. On July 1, 2018, he was traded to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Tage Thompson, Vladimir Sobotka, Patrik Berglund and a pair of draft picks
In 2019, he won the Frank J. Selke Trophy, the Conn Smythe Trophy, and the Stanley Cup as a member of the St. Louis Blues.

Traded to Buffalo, along with F Jamie McGinn, to Buffalo on June 26, 2015 in exchange for Nikita Zadorov, F Mikhail Grigorenko, prospect J.T. Compher, and the 31st pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft(pick later traded to San Jose). Traded to St. Louis on July 1, 2018 in exchange for Tage Thompson, Vladimír Sobotka, Patrik Berglund, a 2019 1st round draft pick, and a 2021 2nd round draft pick.
