Serge Aubin's junior career in the QMJHL was full of promise. He proved to be a solid scorer and excellent playmaker. A lanky centre, Aubin was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins 161st overall in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, but spent most of the next four seasons honing his skills in the minors.
Pittsburgh released Aubin and the Colorado Avalanche signed him as a free agent in December 1998. Upon his arrival with the Avalanche, Aubin was called up for one game during the year from the AHL's Hershey Bears. The following season he appeared in 15 games for the Avs and made enough of an impression that he played all of the playoffs, registering one assist in 17 games.
That summer, a disappointed Avs team let him go, and the Columbus Blue Jackets signed him to a contract. Aubin played the full season, scoring 13 goals for a team desperate for offense. Following a second season with Columbus in 2001-02, Aubin returned to Colorado in 2002-03 solidifying himself as a solid defensive player. However, after only one season back in Colorado, Aubin was acquired by the Atlanta Thrashers prior to the 2003-04 season.
